Plus they wont cut me! <br />
The only major issue i ran into was the use of 6" sanding pads.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLr0i973IyghqsA6QI4kiqZhFia6bYlfSCvAWQ_pupoBqEkThFJg3W9F415Ae_wZY5xQXZjMNOZcT0fcA508R9Rk3aNE2TJw5_Qb-Nqtj4gxIdE5asueXuKnmeVvhQrYGT0kANs1eKAG8/s1600/deburring+day+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLr0i973IyghqsA6QI4kiqZhFia6bYlfSCvAWQ_pupoBqEkThFJg3W9F415Ae_wZY5xQXZjMNOZcT0fcA508R9Rk3aNE2TJw5_Qb-Nqtj4gxIdE5asueXuKnmeVvhQrYGT0kANs1eKAG8/s320/deburring+day+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> <br />
The Sharp edges of the metal kept annihilating the pads.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnDXRCeCBPx7Qzo63BgadxVKsyndqXoAHVrn6HiM2yPghVXpgkhe75ezPzvql2fb8mr_9Y_e0aQKABdVRcdCGkj5qDWQL8q3Ei_Nc6Du2RHZU6KSPiJVdYX3s-rLE5eCrI-v2-VIUlXmg/s1600/deburring+day+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnDXRCeCBPx7Qzo63BgadxVKsyndqXoAHVrn6HiM2yPghVXpgkhe75ezPzvql2fb8mr_9Y_e0aQKABdVRcdCGkj5qDWQL8q3Ei_Nc6Du2RHZU6KSPiJVdYX3s-rLE5eCrI-v2-VIUlXmg/s320/deburring+day+5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I went through at least 5 pads before i switched over to the <a href="http://www.harborfreight.com/4-1-2-half-inch-80-grit-flap-disc-97692.html">4.5" Flap Whee</a>l.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"> Heres a video i shot of me deburring some lames. </div><div style="text-align: center;">And lame is probably what the video is because i don't have the technology to edit it down correctly. I had to use the Flipshare software that came with my camera. But it still gives you a good idea of what i did.</div><div style="text-align: center;">If you do watch it, please take note of the sparks and how cool they are... OHHHHHHHH!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzeUuLFdgLBTXhXjkJPDXG8XQiOYS_e5MbAg92GUcwjET5ODCqzP4alfPwu-s4DF-Ksd8DE9tt95Z7m8Hhi' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"> And now that that is done, its on to the Mask!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />

I will be using the same technique used to make the raising hammer. For those of you who may have missed that blogisode, i used a 6" buffer with a 4.5" 80 grit flap wheel. Both from Harbour Freight. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">BUT, before i can have any fun, i have a few things to do.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">First off, i need to "planish" the edges of the steel. Since they was cut with aviation shears, the edges started to curl up under the pressure. I need a nice flat edge so that it can be sanded evenly.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivvkyHkOhtERMlRf9ENntdHVnlZALejjJ2bxh4eQHqjX8tErBwtblvZ2RMlirN12aDKzZeJkNxbz3Zh0T8GkDvVhdcNh7XtrHoE_n6ERs6aWSIT9JcbCMEZlnFNu8Xu59mudRAXO2VUGU/s1600/vise-+planishing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivvkyHkOhtERMlRf9ENntdHVnlZALejjJ2bxh4eQHqjX8tErBwtblvZ2RMlirN12aDKzZeJkNxbz3Zh0T8GkDvVhdcNh7XtrHoE_n6ERs6aWSIT9JcbCMEZlnFNu8Xu59mudRAXO2VUGU/s320/vise-+planishing.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">When i started the planishing, i was using an old claw hammer and the basement floor, but what i found was that i was getting alot of creases where i struck the steel. The hammer and the floor were not flat enough to even out the steel. Planishing is kind of like ironing the wrinkles out of a shirt. You wouldnt use a iron that wasnt flat would you?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9ROWwHQxuuOhPwmV1MXL_peLcWWRBfI6PjurfG0lXoKg9b1vOtaUlxGRN8qFTHi5VA-fG_UVWPinYxJuBihR55uhK41OctVGNR6l_WahAHHJzm46UHgUIogFR4Hv07baHY9l5VjhP9UE/s1600/vise+planishing+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9ROWwHQxuuOhPwmV1MXL_peLcWWRBfI6PjurfG0lXoKg9b1vOtaUlxGRN8qFTHi5VA-fG_UVWPinYxJuBihR55uhK41OctVGNR6l_WahAHHJzm46UHgUIogFR4Hv07baHY9l5VjhP9UE/s320/vise+planishing+2.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I have replaced the use of the basement floor with the Mini anvil on my vise, as it is a perfectly flat steel surface. As for the claw hammer, i am now using the flat end of my brand new 32oz Ball pein. In Retrospect i could/should have used a lighter weight hammer. It became very hard to <u>carefully</u> planish the steel without striking it to hard. Trying to slow down the speed of the falling hammer also became very tiring after a while.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji1sXjft0tLGk0JM3t79huKkWGvlgEFQ5LYcql0FFXi1ogrT_Xvb5H4y8W6HsJQGGrVZ4xXnUqlvSJe4Wn2Mx33NsJtRgMzyzbeQphkuk0gZpGiBjA8BLFMKzk6iCeaztGoY8AVH-yix8/s1600/vise+planishing+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji1sXjft0tLGk0JM3t79huKkWGvlgEFQ5LYcql0FFXi1ogrT_Xvb5H4y8W6HsJQGGrVZ4xXnUqlvSJe4Wn2Mx33NsJtRgMzyzbeQphkuk0gZpGiBjA8BLFMKzk6iCeaztGoY8AVH-yix8/s320/vise+planishing+3.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">After all of the parts were planished (this process took a few weeks to finish) i had to center punch the holes.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This was quick and painless.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDfhrgUbLp6gcAxB6RZwzilk_3_rXH2AftpxRWhQ9GVTrMOe1xZXRuQXzqB8dJvDfd2OYMFIzCEO4QUA1s6HggiaRORq2Y4A8-FHw0ya3AgsTuvDM4HJsQE4YFJHrIFfkNEZFTbagLmds/s1600/center+punch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDfhrgUbLp6gcAxB6RZwzilk_3_rXH2AftpxRWhQ9GVTrMOe1xZXRuQXzqB8dJvDfd2OYMFIzCEO4QUA1s6HggiaRORq2Y4A8-FHw0ya3AgsTuvDM4HJsQE4YFJHrIFfkNEZFTbagLmds/s320/center+punch.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I used the center punch from my <a href="http://www.harborfreight.com/12-piece-cold-chisel-and-punch-set-66440.html">Punch & Chisel set</a> i got from Harbor freight.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I just line up the tip of the punch dead center on the pre-marked rivet holes and then strike it with the hammer!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrU-3E6L-Gc3mMXoAgT1hO-wCKxoWEEpMq9EO_Ic8m3yNcH8SLbCLujhVfBIqJpeDRSm3WUt94ejycB90qAzahoJZRISbBDnyDJnaDUlB66eQ2sbUzetxM12YiiWww4-Ew8JTbe5ltDog/s1600/center+punch+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrU-3E6L-Gc3mMXoAgT1hO-wCKxoWEEpMq9EO_Ic8m3yNcH8SLbCLujhVfBIqJpeDRSm3WUt94ejycB90qAzahoJZRISbBDnyDJnaDUlB66eQ2sbUzetxM12YiiWww4-Ew8JTbe5ltDog/s320/center+punch+3.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">BOOM goes the Dynamite!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">There are two major reasons to center punch all of the holes first.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The first and most important is, when i shape the steel, the sharpie marks tend to get smudged or removed completely. Without these marks i will have no idea where to punch the holes for the rivets. Then I have to pull out the pattern again to find the marks, which is a pain and i don't want to do it. I don't Wanna!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The second, and most common reason to use a center punch is to aid in the hole punching process. When you drill holes in metal, if there isnt a good starting groove for the drill bit, it makes it very difficult to make an acurate hole. The drill has a tendency to move out of place quickly, but when you center punch the hole, the bit stays in the groove you punched. This will help me line up the holes when i am using the Whitney roper as well.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Now that all of the prep work is done, Its time get back to the grind!</div><script type="text/javascript">

I still have to cutout the mask, but that's a whole other story for another day. Turns out, when i bought the metal, one of the sheets was a thicker gauge steel then the rest. I happened to use this one for the sabatons. This is <u>good</u> because they require only a little dishing and they need a little more strength as they are just a series of thinner metal strips riveted together with straps. This is <u>bad</u> because that makes it twice as hard to cut!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0ho_PUqrP5d3s0mJC7WFdc6-rPwqXMEnOO0pUkoQBaNmISp2LFaIG7-ZZ_PxGOmtibwnUzJvcOYQj3VxC4CvIqXIKWhrvoaETfroc6CGZCdjfyoAWk3b8JwG4UY_pdGWHYt2USxDp-lc/s1600/sabatons+on+vise+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0ho_PUqrP5d3s0mJC7WFdc6-rPwqXMEnOO0pUkoQBaNmISp2LFaIG7-ZZ_PxGOmtibwnUzJvcOYQj3VxC4CvIqXIKWhrvoaETfroc6CGZCdjfyoAWk3b8JwG4UY_pdGWHYt2USxDp-lc/s320/sabatons+on+vise+4.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> So to solve this problem, i clamped the whole sheet to my vise. Instead of holding the metal with one hand, and the shears in the other, i can put all of my force into the shears. Believe me, doing it this way only made the process possible, NOT easier. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I will never use Aviation shears to cut anything thicker than 18 gauge ever again!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVtMM-cGE9boeTUfdAkr-W29-kfOLqnlRlmT33XKxvzdbBAAOK9xL2ZVUJ1xw1CExRojdjyZQSskfWmgiNkY4Wz1BCp5gX9l_uP6YNu9aeO2nL0xErHw40ONw4A1Xpv8STKOVYYMfwar0/s1600/sabatons+on+vise+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVtMM-cGE9boeTUfdAkr-W29-kfOLqnlRlmT33XKxvzdbBAAOK9xL2ZVUJ1xw1CExRojdjyZQSskfWmgiNkY4Wz1BCp5gX9l_uP6YNu9aeO2nL0xErHw40ONw4A1Xpv8STKOVYYMfwar0/s400/sabatons+on+vise+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Almost Done!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

So i decided to make one just in case. I found an old cross pein that was just aching for a makeover. Unfortunately, i was too eager to get started, i didn't take a "before" picture :(</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">But at least i can explain it, this is a blog after all!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I started by removing the handle of the hammer. As it was a very old hammer, it was very easily removed by simply pulling it out. Then i used my file set to give it a preliminary cleaning. My initial idea was to just use the files to finish the whole thing, but it soon became evident that this would not be possible. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I want the face of the hammer, which was flat, to be used for dishing smaller items. In order to do this i must trim down all of the sides so that it forms a dome shape.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The issue was that over the years of use (and misuse) only the lower edge of the face was used for striking making it much softer. The top edge was in relatively good shape, making it allot harder to file by hand.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">To attach the handle, i cleaned up the wood with sand paper.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The biggest problem i had with the handle pre-disassembly was that it was very loose.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">To fix this, i heated up to head of the hammer in the oven for a little while on low heat so that it would contract and make the hole larger. Then, while it was still hot, i put it onto the handle. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Finally, as shown above, i put two nails into the exposed wood of the hammer to expand it to make a snug fit.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The first thing i did with it, was to cut a green scour pad into a circle and place is on the wheel so that i can smooth out one of my stakes.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I used the pad just to get a little more comfortable with the buffer, before i switched over to sandpaper. Kind of like training wheels. I needed a better understanding of how fast the wheel moved.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK8tzTyTXXQ5Xj4dZDWUwR7cu5PbKbAAo3b6r6dmjIQGbkZ7mzhs8OI4qVLEWvtlb-GvXmv-c11wcjKfzh1kYoQvFG7VKAA8W9KT_HHb5ZIWY0mmqgdIblHAhH1JDBF-CKpHcUxgIuaj4/s1600/Buffer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK8tzTyTXXQ5Xj4dZDWUwR7cu5PbKbAAo3b6r6dmjIQGbkZ7mzhs8OI4qVLEWvtlb-GvXmv-c11wcjKfzh1kYoQvFG7VKAA8W9KT_HHb5ZIWY0mmqgdIblHAhH1JDBF-CKpHcUxgIuaj4/s400/Buffer.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Obviously Gloves are a must! I have seen posts stating that it is unsafe to use them with a grinder. Something about getting the fabric stuck in the wheel and twisting your arm all crazy directions. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">But the majority of the posts are Pro glove. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">No Glove no love.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">My Gloves have already saved me from some very nasty scrapes. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Not to mention allowed me to hold really hot metals, friction is a terrible mistress.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgww8XKg8Ar33GfHjqnEwScPNbpG6OE-lI4m62FjApQszzb6gHqqgjc75Hvy71eXtaNbYuWvOx5NrQTsAdHB_GyffZgma0jkCD92IFJ-sHR25t8vpLI1GKDMb7DrXhVBhD3MmTTAikJvAw/s1600/small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgww8XKg8Ar33GfHjqnEwScPNbpG6OE-lI4m62FjApQszzb6gHqqgjc75Hvy71eXtaNbYuWvOx5NrQTsAdHB_GyffZgma0jkCD92IFJ-sHR25t8vpLI1GKDMb7DrXhVBhD3MmTTAikJvAw/s320/small.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Until now, i didn't even realize, but<a href="http://www.armourarchive.org/patterns/spaulders_sinric/"> this pattern was by Sinric</a> too! All i needed was the basic pattern of the lame, but nevertheless! For a smoother look, i wanted the lames to get progressivly larger as they got closer to the shoulder cop. To complete this look, i traced the lame shown above onto cardboard and i used it as the bottom of the three lames. I then laid the cardboard pattern over top of a piece of parchment and traced a progressivly wider lame using the same basic shape of the first one. I repeated this process for the top lame. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

This is something i will handle when it comes time for assembly. My current solution is a piece of firm fabric riveted into place spanning from the top of the vambrace to the bottom or the rerebrace. I plan to sew horizontal lines to give it a "ribbed" look and also offer a little more movement. But well see, these things have a tendency to devolve very quickly.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbeKITOClRKqFfx78-d925AOuPzkco5ZuAvwqb1YPRMLs5g_DwAptrqzi0Va-agntbpE5z-O7KUUscVi7vUxcD34wVuNbmP_l4k3QRxh6Qe0_kWgUYGIIL-zK9RZShSoapf2P560wM3PI/s1600/Arms-+Cardboard+Rerebrace+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbeKITOClRKqFfx78-d925AOuPzkco5ZuAvwqb1YPRMLs5g_DwAptrqzi0Va-agntbpE5z-O7KUUscVi7vUxcD34wVuNbmP_l4k3QRxh6Qe0_kWgUYGIIL-zK9RZShSoapf2P560wM3PI/s320/Arms-+Cardboard+Rerebrace+2.JPG" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Shown above is a closeup of the current rerebrace top and bottom. If you remember from my earlier post, this was a temporary fix. All of the patterns i came across for full arms did not have a cover for the exposed side of the bicep. I used the pattern for the rerebrace and added a similar curve to the Vambrace bottom so that it will function similarly. Now the only issue is sizing!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtyzgP-QOe9ZqNJrcecwQ0NQMAj00H_IquPRdSb0VUq9KCFAh9MOC8aBurwnrWLqeRwOY10Cy9D17_uLgV3x_jSGO_pl5_h5E1P0f-OJH-CcJWp3-o0pPjqwzuZ1ofNbH5dzART4ssBt4/s1600/Arms-+Cardboard+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtyzgP-QOe9ZqNJrcecwQ0NQMAj00H_IquPRdSb0VUq9KCFAh9MOC8aBurwnrWLqeRwOY10Cy9D17_uLgV3x_jSGO_pl5_h5E1P0f-OJH-CcJWp3-o0pPjqwzuZ1ofNbH5dzART4ssBt4/s320/Arms-+Cardboard+5.JPG" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Its just too large! <span style="font-size: xx-small;">That's what she said</span> What? oh nothing.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidw6ZiFQiSVuwv__oLP0lZJOegqjxYo52P375SfXrHSITAvVabN3O-2NlES6heuMayHjd3Wm1xoliu23Afpc59qHY5J_KGNV_eurIDSyDwEjGMSllfAZ0VrCDgOdABcsZBW3ByNG_TEpA/s1600/Arms-+Rerebrace+new+pattern+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidw6ZiFQiSVuwv__oLP0lZJOegqjxYo52P375SfXrHSITAvVabN3O-2NlES6heuMayHjd3Wm1xoliu23Afpc59qHY5J_KGNV_eurIDSyDwEjGMSllfAZ0VrCDgOdABcsZBW3ByNG_TEpA/s320/Arms-+Rerebrace+new+pattern+2.JPG" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">Ahem, Moving along then. Shown above is my final pattern for the upper and lower rerebrace. Last time when i adjusted the overlapping material, i just cut off the excess. In this case, it was not that easy. Since the pattern my pattern was makeshift, i had to "recreate" the pattern in real life, instead of how things work in my mind. I untied the rerebrace from my cardboard arm and wrapped a large piece of parchment around it. I then traced around the edges of the correctly fitted cardboard mock up. The end result was one large piece of parchment. The used the width of the original pattern to decide where to separate the two pieces.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaJlAXHWVm029T0rcL91Qbq-o5SXayU1vhWmCp1GlQXym8eVWvrvOVXKcbrX4_E9ol5jPwUYniInEGnDRcSIPei-CFRpat_UO-Sn-Ty7VnoUSOabSoi9oiBscjKqdgl79HQBVcAf79FDM/s1600/Arms-+Rerebrace+New+pattern.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaJlAXHWVm029T0rcL91Qbq-o5SXayU1vhWmCp1GlQXym8eVWvrvOVXKcbrX4_E9ol5jPwUYniInEGnDRcSIPei-CFRpat_UO-Sn-Ty7VnoUSOabSoi9oiBscjKqdgl79HQBVcAf79FDM/s320/Arms-+Rerebrace+New+pattern.JPG" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">The end result is a nice clean fitted rerebrace! The first, and easiest tweak was to scale back the length of the Vambrace, or forearm. Since Dooms Gauntlets have their own very large Vambraces, the ones connected to the full arm will not need to be very long at all.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8jPuSLZZeKWsqYirSLWJRR3pMNnvzyKyxivNX-eKtp9zWqvPM1oKISSp9q9kGH4QO6o3uC8kS2S-Z8P-mWIQBLKSTvPabLCopVGmiMJfyH29SVjASp8yXfJ0pNYQF_NXQJqdgY5Ej7H0/s1600/P1010176.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8jPuSLZZeKWsqYirSLWJRR3pMNnvzyKyxivNX-eKtp9zWqvPM1oKISSp9q9kGH4QO6o3uC8kS2S-Z8P-mWIQBLKSTvPabLCopVGmiMJfyH29SVjASp8yXfJ0pNYQF_NXQJqdgY5Ej7H0/s400/P1010176.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494474353908043858" /></a><br /><br />The adjustment was very simple. First what i did was cut a few inches of length from the top and bottom halves of the vambrace, shown above.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcyRVl-W9DtbjccPwaPR0Tsx5XIZLeDupjNnDJCo3AIvWggL84ZFSTHbpV5WZCnfSVswUusZgnrgSbB6ksW91CWaXN-T5kAnQ6X5oZjMxAanKyAMrww2E3I6U5PWvHjgj-fXEelQ0tBfE/s1600/P1010177.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcyRVl-W9DtbjccPwaPR0Tsx5XIZLeDupjNnDJCo3AIvWggL84ZFSTHbpV5WZCnfSVswUusZgnrgSbB6ksW91CWaXN-T5kAnQ6X5oZjMxAanKyAMrww2E3I6U5PWvHjgj-fXEelQ0tBfE/s400/P1010177.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494469946037940194" /></a><br />Then, i put the demi-vambrace on my arm to see how it fit. This pattern is intended to be worn with a pair of gauntlets with very short wrist guards. Because of that the bottom hole was large enough to squeeze your fist through, but as it flared up towards the elbow it gets much larger in width. For what i need it for, this was much too wide as this will need to fit <span style="font-style:italic;">under</span> another larger vambrace. So with the newly shortened demi vambrace on my forearm, i taped down the excess width until it fit comfortably. As i took it off i made sure that my fist would fit through the bottom hole. In black marker to traced where the cardboard overlapped itself. I then removed the tape and cut the excess material until the top and bottom fit without any overlapping. The Photo below shows where the overlapping occurs.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGjotObeLLqz8DL7fMUvkrdO8XBPBJE67fW3nbod6IpChsu5cGHBVk1smOzUqs5U_G2Y-g8dA5ewIdS4y38s2KdH8Yi8o8QqSU9ZZUZw0vfcMEJGGh02ap1qOTTx6J-800fIgUd9mklx8/s1600/P1010180.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGjotObeLLqz8DL7fMUvkrdO8XBPBJE67fW3nbod6IpChsu5cGHBVk1smOzUqs5U_G2Y-g8dA5ewIdS4y38s2KdH8Yi8o8QqSU9ZZUZw0vfcMEJGGh02ap1qOTTx6J-800fIgUd9mklx8/s400/P1010180.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494486326698195810" /></a><br /><br />The end result was much more comfortable and practical. The next adjustment that needed to be made was to the Rerebrace, or upper arm. But ill save that for another post!<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><script type="text/javascript">var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? I used Sinric's pattern from the <a href="http://www.armourarchive.org/patterns/arms_15thC_sinric/">Armour Archive</a>. Although, I will have to make a few pattern adjustments for this to look like Dooms armour.<br /><br />The first (and easiest) adjustment i made was to remove the "wing" from the couter. Doom instead has something called a Rondel. A rondel is a circular piece of metal used for protection, as part of a harness of plate armour, or attached to a helmet, breastplate, couter or on a gauntlet. I have circled his Rondels in the picture below:<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1xf7_di2IctxBYq9opqzx9pjCOaNrKZFkRq-mOrWDhUf6ForF7xBPRH_88G6QyGVyfD8B8n2CgPKp9ECqMw-eekXyNjcTCHQd808kJWz6azjSsl4HF3Vsib1p2GxheDt5dYJXwF0wGIQ/s1600/dr_doom-Rondel.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 252px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1xf7_di2IctxBYq9opqzx9pjCOaNrKZFkRq-mOrWDhUf6ForF7xBPRH_88G6QyGVyfD8B8n2CgPKp9ECqMw-eekXyNjcTCHQd808kJWz6azjSsl4HF3Vsib1p2GxheDt5dYJXwF0wGIQ/s400/dr_doom-Rondel.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486310829969247282" /></a><br />The Photo below shows the pattern cut out of cardboard. The top right piece is the couter. Normally the top portion of the pattern would have a large wing or "fan" attached to it, but i removed that and just matched it to the other side. I will make a pattern for the Rondel and attach that later on. <br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiEefvqP9SVFHeFriHYxi6bhsKAkxibDYtmze1my66X4Nhdmb0m7B3P87S0Tho0DcjyUMROPSDNfuBHna8h9bGSCIJJgXR3D0K4us29GPBdKoFDHTxiE4bllTSOtFawnK0b8KGkpTgWbI/s1600/P1010168.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiEefvqP9SVFHeFriHYxi6bhsKAkxibDYtmze1my66X4Nhdmb0m7B3P87S0Tho0DcjyUMROPSDNfuBHna8h9bGSCIJJgXR3D0K4us29GPBdKoFDHTxiE4bllTSOtFawnK0b8KGkpTgWbI/s400/P1010168.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486301910227991778" /></a><br />My next major adjustment was to add another piece of metal to cover up my bicep. The pattern only has a rerebrace to cover up the back of my upper arm. All of the patterns i looked at never seemed to have anything covering this area so i hope that it is not a functionality issue. I just hate having such a large area exposed. The piece on the left in the photo below is my mock up. I will have to play around with it a little to make sure it fits comfortably.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggI9y4tAT0Bb1A2VRRea6zdFAnTWvP9x3d7PF7KrmHEM9UohDKMD_Tt06nkhji6eVlUgPehyFrPeWosFDGigSfOiIGK8n6Y4XvYw0uH-zDK4a4v9bI4za2M4Fn3B6GFKW-rGCtV3TKWTY/s1600/P1010169.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggI9y4tAT0Bb1A2VRRea6zdFAnTWvP9x3d7PF7KrmHEM9UohDKMD_Tt06nkhji6eVlUgPehyFrPeWosFDGigSfOiIGK8n6Y4XvYw0uH-zDK4a4v9bI4za2M4Fn3B6GFKW-rGCtV3TKWTY/s400/P1010169.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486301915186177218" /></a><br />Below is a photo of my first draft complete arm. Another thing i noticed as i put it on, was that the Vambrace was too long considering how large the Gauntlets are going to be. That will be the next adjustment i have to make. I have already marked off where i will need to cut it in black marker.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIRt1yel8coo6pP4GhO1n3VJWKLkUX2IMiv5mb0KczvKkf7SScG0A-v2ZHlwKxRXlKNkZvukVQ2iKZj7YybtLmQ4rtJvc3pmWdznblXkxF6dKiQ_8jHdnO-B5iZvjvts7L3vcy4XKnTlY/s1600/P1010171.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIRt1yel8coo6pP4GhO1n3VJWKLkUX2IMiv5mb0KczvKkf7SScG0A-v2ZHlwKxRXlKNkZvukVQ2iKZj7YybtLmQ4rtJvc3pmWdznblXkxF6dKiQ_8jHdnO-B5iZvjvts7L3vcy4XKnTlY/s400/P1010171.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486301935137874034" /></a><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAx9CYgDcw-INSzj3fE499mJoBz_5by0tZB4GP2vAl1JkS3DmHFmT2ua-G7DoY9y9AU-BfsWqVSxW0Unb8Cgzthf2fk9CuwNGz_O2obef8sqo-Bnjkkhxl6yRQmc5M4UDelcYYmSwoOsk/s1600/P1010170.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAx9CYgDcw-INSzj3fE499mJoBz_5by0tZB4GP2vAl1JkS3DmHFmT2ua-G7DoY9y9AU-BfsWqVSxW0Unb8Cgzthf2fk9CuwNGz_O2obef8sqo-Bnjkkhxl6yRQmc5M4UDelcYYmSwoOsk/s400/P1010170.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486301924441753250" /></a><br />Not bad for a first draft and its great to see that it actually articulates! Kind of defeats the purpose of progress blog if i never update it huh? Who thought working 70 hours, building a suit of armor AND writing about it would be this hard? I will be posting "old Progress reports" for a little while to catch up! And to kick that off, here's the first one!<br /><br />This feels like a trip down memory lane writing like this. So about a month back, after completing the dishing on the shoulder cop. I started making sure that the lames i designed were going to fit and look good. The Lames are the smaller strips of metal designed to articulate joints and pivot points. *Spoiler Alert* The lame i designed was more cosmetic than functional and thus Failed at being useful.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjGBdylakMZFZlKLc0wtSCvd4SGGg4aNakjyfiBSuafLMc2kUAh6i8boemidABjYvLtSH7UHJbY_R3fAmzzuJh5OgqtmiMm36H5rnyJd0cg60kBYOehl4tijvVB620dpJYmqsi5ZpE52A/s1600/P1010163.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjGBdylakMZFZlKLc0wtSCvd4SGGg4aNakjyfiBSuafLMc2kUAh6i8boemidABjYvLtSH7UHJbY_R3fAmzzuJh5OgqtmiMm36H5rnyJd0cg60kBYOehl4tijvVB620dpJYmqsi5ZpE52A/s400/P1010163.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485945112742033666" /></a><br />Not only did it not line up, but it also made the shoulder look too round. I didn't count on the metal curving as much as it did when i dished the cop (as i had never done it before).<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3XnQWSzRUN2rHI8n3apRbhYoV5XylVyiZzsTf3Hy0IhN90RZe2uo3XzVnYUglE6y3hcKxdwmXxsc1Jgmu1MB7XCd7Zdb_AQhq3DLqocTfHBI228ElZvbxOgUF4IzFKMYLNthzMDsMtRY/s1600/P1010164.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3XnQWSzRUN2rHI8n3apRbhYoV5XylVyiZzsTf3Hy0IhN90RZe2uo3XzVnYUglE6y3hcKxdwmXxsc1Jgmu1MB7XCd7Zdb_AQhq3DLqocTfHBI228ElZvbxOgUF4IzFKMYLNthzMDsMtRY/s400/P1010164.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485945122727917458" /></a><br />When i taped the two pieces together and tried it out of my shoulder, the Lame started to cut into my bicep as i lifted up my arm. Unfortunately, this process ate up allot of my time. Not only do you have to focus on how the finished product is going to look, but also how it will <strong>function</strong>. The biggest concern was making sure i can still move my shoulder. I found a pretty simple design for attaching the pieces which still leaves me with some mobility without over complicating the design. Originally i wanted to have the three pieces Pivot, so that when i moved it moved with me. Unfortunately that required very precise design and that i did not have time for. So instead the design is very simple. The three pieces will be attached by a straight piece of leather that will allow some flexibility in my shoulder. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnOLvZ5VhU1qAN6ZepdWM-M0vmpPDSV9xM-5tAZQIOs5qpG5TsXoU49DIHqK63Z-p9cANCT_1gGUxkCu_uTCwIu1j0A4OHYGvCQDk5QyR9aUsMJw0l-hPL3TGor0D4g1eFlNqv8sfwqR4/s1600/P1010154.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnOLvZ5VhU1qAN6ZepdWM-M0vmpPDSV9xM-5tAZQIOs5qpG5TsXoU49DIHqK63Z-p9cANCT_1gGUxkCu_uTCwIu1j0A4OHYGvCQDk5QyR9aUsMJw0l-hPL3TGor0D4g1eFlNqv8sfwqR4/s400/P1010154.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5469612121426110722" /></a><br />Shown above is the finished pattern which has two "lames" and a "cop". A lamé is a solid piece of sheet metal used as a component of a larger section of plate armor. Multiple lamés are riveted together or connected by leather straps to form an articulated piece of armor that provides flexible protection. The cop is the larger piece that will be rounded and shaped to fit comfortably over the majority of my shoulder.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_lpo6RANdEQlg99vgY0cV8kxXEvR1o7BSkjH40r4CIj9q5EytJv1eO7BxEz3I3BiuCs2F54VafsByhmqvS-JCrzW4R8TV4fYocl2b9-nxEDOcHhWUKTH0fqKmFT7Bxf44qKr1h-dAVOg/s1600/P1010159.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_lpo6RANdEQlg99vgY0cV8kxXEvR1o7BSkjH40r4CIj9q5EytJv1eO7BxEz3I3BiuCs2F54VafsByhmqvS-JCrzW4R8TV4fYocl2b9-nxEDOcHhWUKTH0fqKmFT7Bxf44qKr1h-dAVOg/s400/P1010159.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5469617611477401650" /></a><br />I traced the pattern onto my sheet metal, trying to conserve as much space as possible. Planishing is a metalworking technique that involves finely shaping and smoothing sheet metal by hammering it against a shaped surface called a planishing stake. I called the Mta, Amtrak, Antique dealers and even a few Local hobby shops, in hopes that someone had one or knew where i could get one. Finally, i spoke to a nice lady at the Westchester tourism board. She said "Just take a walk down a railroad track and your bound to come across one". Now i thought that this was just a way for her to get rid of me and fast, but i was desperate. So i headed down to the local tracks and low and behold...<br /><br /><center><b>Jackpot!</b> <br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzuomH3dEz8IqYYW_E0XrZQKZPJxKpftzCrQyB0FggmBPUV4dIuCnI6Dbao48WBwVdmsPogK2ZtLs54ZZGz0qpkm4tR7kJPFsoxSc7SiYkzc8PFDPj20ev0ZLHjFDPzk7622y5E1Qy2WA/s1600/Jackpot.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzuomH3dEz8IqYYW_E0XrZQKZPJxKpftzCrQyB0FggmBPUV4dIuCnI6Dbao48WBwVdmsPogK2ZtLs54ZZGz0qpkm4tR7kJPFsoxSc7SiYkzc8PFDPj20ev0ZLHjFDPzk7622y5E1Qy2WA/s400/Jackpot.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461873612508460930" /></a> <br />I Found a total of 5 Railroad spikes, 4 round top bolts, a long piece of steel for shaping around and a large piece of flat heavy steel that i will use as an anvil.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmUvTuRdFg4p4kSlo_QFYAOT4WsyLuECmvgpEr4L1mXu5TC9Y4hTgi_NZwBCKaAyUINHOcrIayegrW6rzkfufOKWibrZTdzWrL8Lfgn7UWwgXCS-OFygp-J8bAb6zEXmU8KkY5UuOpgA4/s1600/bolt+oval.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmUvTuRdFg4p4kSlo_QFYAOT4WsyLuECmvgpEr4L1mXu5TC9Y4hTgi_NZwBCKaAyUINHOcrIayegrW6rzkfufOKWibrZTdzWrL8Lfgn7UWwgXCS-OFygp-J8bAb6zEXmU8KkY5UuOpgA4/s400/bolt+oval.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461880827119098578" /></a><br />This is one of the Oval Head bolts. Then, as with the last post, i have been chipping away at the center with the claw of the hammer.<br /><br /><br /><strong>Dishing Stump- Day 3:</strong><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTuCLblZP6koYt_87aphTuwQQZKRBkpU5JaMMdlZ45IU_2tui8hDVGAoXOMIZ7D3q2qZ0eCZqnR4El7toP4riv6jE48jBePlLn2lb9GuSPrcOeDFSzHmSK7HOpxAsCdo3u9XYPkx4a7Ho/s1600-h/stump+day+3-+1.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTuCLblZP6koYt_87aphTuwQQZKRBkpU5JaMMdlZ45IU_2tui8hDVGAoXOMIZ7D3q2qZ0eCZqnR4El7toP4riv6jE48jBePlLn2lb9GuSPrcOeDFSzHmSK7HOpxAsCdo3u9XYPkx4a7Ho/s400/stump+day+3-+1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5448828477169973042" /></a><br />Come day Three, I thought of a new way to go about this. Instead of drilling these holes with inconsistent depths, i can use the claw of the hammer to "scoop" out the wood meat. I used a smaller Sharper edged claw hammer and bashed it down with a heavier hammer face to face. The holes i had already made were a huge help because the hammer didn't get stuck as it cut through. The great thing is that the line it makes are very smooth and perfectly curved. So far, this is working out great! Although, one Huge suggestion to anyone who uses this technique, Protect your ears! Two hammers slamming together is very loud! Its a high pitched stabbing noise and after you hear it 200 times in a row, you wont be able to hear anything else.<br /><br /><br /><strong>Dishing Stump- Day 4:</strong><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVrgnZHWtNZ8kOfXGBQHFM5LRlnnIx1dUlh0nqfSEZfkpg47mq6v7_EnFlpY8T6XInyc31ib3v0ZM93e9v09q-oSWhEiFNZ5JMaM6zCYQK06NcDFMEaFER8qQ6_1FgTAD4-9YgPWdkn-A/s1600-h/stump+day+4-+2.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVrgnZHWtNZ8kOfXGBQHFM5LRlnnIx1dUlh0nqfSEZfkpg47mq6v7_EnFlpY8T6XInyc31ib3v0ZM93e9v09q-oSWhEiFNZ5JMaM6zCYQK06NcDFMEaFER8qQ6_1FgTAD4-9YgPWdkn-A/s400/stump+day+4-+2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5448831819745345298" /></a><br />Full Steam Ahead! This is working out perfectly and I'm almost done! But I missed my personal deadline of 3/13/10 for the dishing stump to be completed. That's alright though, ill have it done tonight.<br /><br /><script type="text/javascript"><br />var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? I went down to my City recycling center and they had a whole area full of whole FREE logs! You just have to be a resident. This one caught my eye because of its anvil shape and lack of ROT. I have been trying to dry it out for the past few days with a space heater, but then the bottom (the wettest part) started to crack! So i coated all of the exposed wood with Mineral Oil to prevent any further cracking. Its dry enough now, so i started to work on the dishing bowl last night. I am using a Drill with a large bit and a claw Hammer as highlighted in Eric Slyters "<a href="http://www.arador.com/articles/stump.html">How to Make a Sinking (Dishing) Stump</a>" tutorial. Its about 6" in diameter. I am going to drill progressively deeper holes from the outside ring until i reach the center, then remove any excess wood with the claw of the hammer. I will finish it by pounding down any jagged edges and then sand it smooth wherever necessary. As you can probably see, i have been hacking away at the center with the claw of the hammer to relieve stress (after the drill ran out of power).<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdNfvkHcQk6iPGOxJRjTMVB3wERO1Ggh5rqzbKy8iJv0VxsG97HO3K2QRJOZ4uWThfyZ1dfLQ3GlKT3r4Q8m1xFWVl7mbsHod6RojxS5PfmcolmRjG67hR3GLV3z_pPKLxVmSB56XpRwI/s1600-h/P1010152.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdNfvkHcQk6iPGOxJRjTMVB3wERO1Ggh5rqzbKy8iJv0VxsG97HO3K2QRJOZ4uWThfyZ1dfLQ3GlKT3r4Q8m1xFWVl7mbsHod6RojxS5PfmcolmRjG67hR3GLV3z_pPKLxVmSB56XpRwI/s400/P1010152.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447115107377399922" /></a><br /><br /><br /><script type="text/javascript"><br />var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? I Have Seven Months until NYC Comic Con 2010! I have to say that makes me a little nervous considering how far along i am NOT. Allot of simple metal projects seem to take 7 months alone to complete and I'm doing more than one in that time period! Fortunately i have been doing allot of research and i feel that i am really prepared for the task i am undertaking. I should be, Ive had almost a year to get ready! Yeesh. Honestly I have been a little overwhelmed by the crafting magnitude of this project since the beginning. And up until a few months ago i didn't even have a second to think beyond my job.<br /><br />So as for a deadline. I am giving myself: <br />Two months for the metal work on the arms.<br />Two months for the metal work on the legs.<br />One month for the mask and leather work (Straps, Holster & belt).<br />One month for Riveting and finishing touches. <br />One month for the cloak and Tunic.<br /><br />Well see.....<br /><br /><script type="text/javascript"><br />var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ?
